Governor Monday Okpebholo of Nigeria's Edo State has said he will sign the death warrants of four convicted kidnappers if they do not appeal within 30 days, Premium Times reports, citing the News Agency of Nigeria.
The four were sentenced to death by the state's Special Criminal Court on 29 September for abducting a woman at a vegetable market on Airport Road in Benin City. Speaking at a church in Ekpoma on Friday, Mr Okpebholo said tackling kidnapping and cultism had been a priority since he took office, and that President Bola Tinubu had backed his approach.
He said he had warned traditional rulers not to plead on behalf of anyone involved in crime. The church's founder urged members to vote for the governor and his preferred candidates in the 2027 elections.
