Lawyers for Tyler Robinson, who is accused of murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk, have proposed a trial in 2029, saying they need that long to prepare, PBS NewsHour reports in an Associated Press story.
Robinson, 23, has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder over the shooting at Utah Valley University last year and could face the death penalty. His lawyers say they must review tens of thousands of files and look into his life for factors that could affect sentencing.
Prosecutors, who expect a 17-week trial, have suggested starting on 31 January 2028. Lawyers for Kirk's widow, Erika Kirk, called the defence timetable absurd and said the trial should begin next October. President Donald Trump said on social media that the case should be tried within a month. Judge Tony Graf scheduled a hearing on Friday to set a date.
