Mexico City lawmakers are considering prison terms of up to nine years for people who poison animals in parks and other public spaces, Mexico News Daily reported. Sponsors say baiting has injured pets and wildlife and that existing penalties are too weak to deter offenders. The draft would toughen sanctions and give prosecutors clearer tools when contaminated food is left in shared areas. Animal-welfare groups welcomed the focus but urged pairing punishment with cameras, patrols and public reporting channels. Critics caution that intent can be hard to prove and that education campaigns still matter. A final text and vote timing remain subject to committee negotiation in the capital’s congress.
