Malaysia’s former prime minister Najib Razak has a court order clearing the way for house detention after his party arranged to settle a multimillion-ringgit fine, lawyer Farhan Shafee told reporters, Daily Maverick reported. Shafee said the paperwork would be taken to Kajang prison, where Najib is serving time. The step follows political argument over who should pay and earlier criticism from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of any UMNO plan to cover the penalty. Moving Najib out of prison would ease his confinement while other cases continue. Critics say leniency weakens anti-graft messaging; allies insist the courts must honour the order once financial conditions are met.
