Guadalupe Taddei, president of Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE), has said she will resign, after media reports of alleged irregularities in the institute's contracts, Mexico News Daily reports.
In a statement, she said protecting the institute and allowing it to carry out its constitutional duties had to come before any personal interest. It is the first time the head of Mexico's electoral authority has stepped down since its predecessor was founded in 1990.
Newspapers including Reforma and El Universal reported last week on her links to a businessman whose family's companies had won INE contracts. Reforma also reported that seven suppliers were being investigated by the government's Financial Intelligence Unit over alleged money laundering and rigged bidding.
The allegations have not been proven. A former head of the authority described both the claims and the resignation as unprecedented.
