Chinese AI lab Moonshot AI, maker of the Kimi models, has held talks this year to rent computing capacity on Nvidia Blackwell chips at data centres in Europe, CNBC reports, citing four people familiar with the matter.
US export controls effectively bar Blackwell chips from being sent to China, but renting capacity from cloud providers abroad is not clearly covered by current rules. According to CNBC's sources, Moonshot discussed leasing clusters of 8,000 or more Blackwell processors, chiefly to run its models for users and possibly for training. One source called the lab very aggressive in its search for computing power.
The White House said in July that Moonshot had accessed Blackwell chips through a facility in Thailand. Moonshot, Nvidia, US officials and the Chinese government did not respond to CNBC's requests for comment.
