Both main parties in New Zealand have signalled support for reforming the Working for Families tax credit scheme so fewer households end up owing money at the end of the tax year, RNZ reports.
A review last year suggested measures including assessing household income more often. At present, families estimate their annual income in advance and many only discover they have been overpaid once the year closes. Inland Revenue said it was still working with other agencies on options, including a shorter assessment period. National said several measures were being considered but no decisions had been made. Labour's revenue spokesperson, Deborah Russell, said families should not face unexpected bills and called on the government to reverse staff cuts at Inland Revenue.
