Canterbury students’ robot solves 4×4 Rubik’s Cube in under 10 seconds

·

Four engineering students at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch have built a robot that solved a 4×4 Rubik's Cube in 9.806 seconds, and they are waiting for Guinness World Records to confirm the time, the New Zealand Herald reports.

Maz Cameron, Johann Torres, Caleb Everitt and Hayden Watson spent about a year on the project after seeing a video of the current record-holding robot, which took about 45 seconds. They put the fastest human time at about 15 seconds.

The robot uses four cameras to read the cube's colours and an open-source algorithm to plan its moves. The students said it can turn faces on all three axes without repositioning the cube, and they added suction cups to stop it jamming at speed.
