Student groups and activists joined the parents of Sahil Wakode, an IIT Bombay student who died on 18 September, at a protest at Mumbai's Azad Maidan on Friday, demanding the arrest of two professors accused of harassing him, The Hindu reports.
Protesters, including the All India Independent Scheduled Castes Association and the All India Students' Federation, named Professor Suryanarayana Doolla and the institute's director, Shireesh Kedare, and called for a transparent inquiry and stronger protections against caste discrimination. The family's protest has entered its third week.
A police case has been registered at Powai under laws on abetment of suicide and the SC/ST Atrocities Act. The family's lawyer, Siddharth Ingle, questioned why no arrests had been made, and Sahil's father, Ravindra Wakode, said the protest would continue until action was taken.
