Suliman Carrim, a businessman and former ANC regional treasurer in North West province, has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg as he prepared to travel abroad with his family, Daily Maverick reports in an analysis of the Madlanga Commission's impact.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the arrest on Thursday night, over a 'cold case' linked to the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, followed an alert from the Madlanga Recommendations Task Team. Carrim is also expected to face charges for failing to appear before the commission.
The commission, formally the inquiry into criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system, has referred 14 officials for criminal investigation in just over a year, the paper says. They include dismissed deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, who is in custody awaiting bail on separate charges.
