National has moved back into the 30s in the latest 1News-Verian poll, while Labour has fallen to around the level of its 2023 election defeat, the NZ Herald reports. The poll comes as early voting is about to begin.
Translated into seats, National would have 38, Labour 32, the Greens 19, Act 13, NZ First nine and The Opportunity Party eight. That would give the governing coalition 60 seats against 56 for Labour, the Greens, Te Pāti Māori and the Te Tai Tokerau Party, leaving Opportunity in a position to decide who governs.
Christopher Luxon was unchanged on 20% as preferred prime minister, with Chris Hipkins down three points to 17%. The poll of 1,003 people was carried out from 15 to 19 October and has a margin of error of 3.1%. A separate Post/Freshwater Strategy poll released on Tuesday put Labour slightly ahead of National.
