Malaysia's Registrar of Societies has cancelled the registration of the main opposition coalition, Perikatan Nasional, amid a feud between its two largest parties, CNA reports.
The registrar said the coalition's response to a warning issued last month had failed to answer the grounds for deregistration. The move followed a complaint from Bersatu, led by former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, that it had been left out of a coalition supreme council meeting in July by its partner, the Islamist party PAS, which holds more seats than any other single party in parliament.
Without the coalition's registration, its member parties cannot stand together under one banner. A state election in Melaka is due on 14 November, and an early general election is possible. The coalition's secretary-general said it would challenge the decision in court.
