AI actors such as a digital Val Kilmer and Tilly Norwood test Hollywood’s limits

·

The western As Deep as the Grave features an AI-generated version of the late Val Kilmer, approved by his family, and has reopened debate about whether synthetic performers could replace human actors, The Guardian reports in a feature on the technology.

The piece notes the hostile reaction to the AI "actor" Tilly Norwood, whom Emily Blunt called really scary, and plans for her to appear in a feature film, Misaligned. Tim Webber of the British visual effects company Framestore told the paper AI models learn only the surface of images and remain a long way from genuine emotional performance.

Higgsfield AI, which has released two fully AI-generated films online this year, argues the tools free creators from slow studio production and says the change cannot be resisted. The Guardian notes the films serve largely as showcases for the company's own tools.
