Norway's government has announced that wearing a helmet will be mandatory for everyone riding an all-terrain vehicle from 1 January 2027, Norwegian broadcaster NRK reports. Transport minister Kamzy Gunaratnam said too many people are hurt under the current rules, noting that riders have no protection if they crash.
According to the figures cited, 251 people were injured or killed in ATV accidents over the past five years, including 58 seriously injured and nine deaths between 2020 and 2025. Nine in ten of those accidents involved ATVs registered as tractors, and around 40 per cent of the victims were aged just 16 or 17. Students at a secondary school in Mandal, in Agder, told the broadcaster they welcomed the change, with one teenager saying a helmet had protected him when he overturned his vehicle.
