Norway’s TV-aksjonen appeal raises NOK 251 million for refugee housing

·

Norway's annual TV-aksjonen fundraising appeal collected 251,299,209 kroner on Sunday, according to the public broadcaster NRK. This year's money goes to the Norwegian Refugee Council, which plans to use it to give safe homes to families who have fled war and crises.

About 62,000 volunteers went door to door with collection tins across the country, and businesses, schools and volunteer groups also contributed. King Haakon took part as a collector on the island of Kvitsøy, which went on to give the most per resident of any municipality, at 323 kroner a head. The broadcast included auctions and stunts to raise extra money. The council's secretary general, Jan Egeland, said the organisation was overwhelmed and deeply grateful, and that it could begin providing housing to thousands of displaced families straight away.
