Parent groups in Paraguay have delivered a citizens' bill to the Senate that would impose prison terms of four to ten years for spreading gender-related content aimed at children, The Rio Times reports.
The proposal, backed by about 50,000 signatures, was handed over after a march through Asunción on 21 October. It would add a new article to the penal code covering material that could alter a child's "natural perception of sexuality", with 10 to 15 years for officials and up to 20 years if an official approved such material.
Senate president Basilio Núñez received the document and pledged support, and the ruling Colorado Party holds a majority in Congress. About 50 civil society groups oppose the bill, critics say its wording is too broad, and the Archdiocese of Asunción has kept its distance. No debate date has been set.
