A judge in San Pedro Sula has ordered two officers from Honduras's new anti-extortion police division held in custody on aggravated drug-trafficking charges, The Rio Times reports. A third officer from the same unit has not surrendered and faces an arrest warrant.
Prosecutors from the organised-crime unit say a search of a house on 19 October found 114 small bags of suspected marijuana, 65 wraps of suspected cocaine and some suspected crack, as well as ammunition, military-style clothing and old police badges. One officer also faces a charge of holding prohibited ammunition.
The division, known as DAET, was set up in May to fight extortion and gangs such as Barrio 18, which the US lists as a terrorist group. The first court hearing is set for 26 October, and the police disciplinary body is running a separate inquiry.
