Patricia Bullrich, who leads the governing La Libertad Avanza group in Argentina's Senate, has said she is ready to be president, though she stopped short of saying she will stand in next year's election, the Buenos Aires Times reports.
In an interview with the news site Infobae, the 70-year-old said decisions on candidates were still a year away and that President Javier Milei always takes the lead on candidacy. She said she had not been asked to be his running mate and stressed the value of having her own base of voters.
Bullrich came third in the 2023 presidential election, then backed Milei and served as his security minister. Her comments follow reports of friction in the ruling coalition after she publicly questioned several government decisions, and a meeting with Milei on 9 October aimed at easing tensions.
