Pennsylvania has become one of the first US states to require labels on advertising created or heavily altered with artificial intelligence, The Verge reports.
The Artificial Intelligence Deceptive Advertising Act became law on Thursday when Governor Josh Shapiro signed it. It covers images, video, audio and text, and requires the disclosure to appear in the same format as the advert itself. Because it applies wherever an advert is made, labels may also appear on ads shown in other states that run in Pennsylvania.
The Verge says the law leaves significant loopholes. It does not define what counts as significantly modified, it exempts parody, satire, commentary and anything evidently fictional, and it appears to apply only where synthetic content creates a false impression of a product or service. The office of State Senator Nick Pisciottano, who introduced the bill, did not respond to a request for comment.
