At least 24 people were killed when a bus carrying church mourners collided with a lorry on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Makueni County, south-eastern Kenya, police said on Sunday, according to Al Jazeera.
The bus, belonging to a Mombasa church, was bringing passengers home from their pastor's funeral in western Kenya. The local county commissioner said the driver had tried to overtake several vehicles before hitting an oncoming lorry, and the national transport authority named dangerous overtaking as a possible cause, though one survivor said the lorry hit the bus from behind.
The crash came just over three weeks after 17 people, most of them Catholic pilgrims, died on the same road. President William Ruto ordered inspections of public transport vehicles, and the transport minister promised tougher enforcement against speeding and reckless overtaking. The authority has called for road crashes to be declared a national disaster.
