Queensland is holding back from tougher limits on screens in classrooms even as Australia's education ministers agreed to a back-to-basics overhaul of primary maths, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. Federal Education Minister Jason Clare said every state had agreed to set or consider screen-time limits and bans on artificial intelligence in schools after Monday's meeting.
Queensland Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said more work was needed on the effects of screen time and that the state would review federal proposals and keep talking to families. Queensland schools largely decide their own technology use, and the state introduced an AI assistant for year 9 and 10 pupils this year.
Curriculum changes approved by the national authority, including simpler maths content, earlier financial literacy and new material on antisemitism, could reach Queensland schools as early as next year.
