Researchers using test accounts set up as 13-year-olds were able to download 135 apps that can digitally undress people or put their faces on to nude bodies from Apple's and Google's app stores, according to a Tech Transparency Project report shared with The Guardian. The advocacy group searched for terms such as AI video generator, and tested the apps on AI-generated images rather than real women.
The findings suggest parental controls are failing to stop children reaching such tools, even though several governments have moved to remove them and most US states have outlawed AI-generated child sexual abuse material. The Guardian describes a case in Pennsylvania in which a high school student allegedly used one app to make sexual videos from photos of six girls, including the daughter of a parent who has since campaigned on the issue.
