Sarawak's state assembly will be dissolved on Monday 26 October, clearing the way for an election within 60 days, CNA reports.
Premier Abang Johari Openg announced the move in Kuching after gaining the consent of the state governor. The vote had not been due until April 2027, and a state minister has suggested polling could take place on 12 or 19 December. Malaysia's Election Commission will now set the date.
With 82 seats, Sarawak has the largest state legislature in Malaysia. The ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak coalition won 76 seats in 2021, and the election will test its mandate under Abang Johari, premier since 2017.
The poll follows a string of state polls, including Sabah, Johor and Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka votes on 14 November, and comes as Sarawak pushes for more autonomy, including control of its oil and gas.
