Five SAS soldiers arrested on suspicion of murdering two teenagers during a 2022 raid in Syria were sent back on operations while the investigation against them remained open, according to a Sunday Times investigation reported by GB News. The troops had been on a night mission in Deir ez-Zor to capture a senior figure in an Islamic State cell when they confronted two teenage boys who, the report says, would not surrender and were shot.
The pair were found to be unarmed, and the soldiers were accused of using disproportionate force. A military police inquiry, Operation Tanglement, followed, and the men were arrested and then released after questioning. The report says they spent about three years under investigation while still carrying out missions. All five have since left the armed forces and had written to Sir Keir Starmer, then prime minister, complaining that their arrests were unlawful.
