Residents of South Warnborough, a Hampshire village, say they feel unsafe after travellers moved on to an eight-acre plot of greenbelt land during the late-August bank holiday and covered much of it in tarmac and gravel, GB News reports, citing interviews first given to the Daily Mail.
Witnesses said men, some masked, brought diggers onto the former farmland at Hares Farm on the evening of 28 August. Caravans and mobile homes are now on the site, which was reportedly bought for more than £100,000.
Hart District Council has obtained an injunction against further work, but people are understood to still be living there. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said it was a civil matter, that it had no enforcement powers over the land's use at this stage, and that it was running extra patrols.
