India's governing Bharatiya Janata Party says it will stage protests across the country on Monday over comments by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, The Hindu reports.
The row stems from a remark Kharge made at an event in Patna, Bihar, on Sunday that referred to Modi's father. The BJP called the words offensive and inappropriate.
Home Minister Amit Shah said Kharge had abandoned all standards of decorum and accused Congress of a long pattern of personal attacks on Modi and his family, citing past insults including references to the prime minister's mother and his background as a tea seller. Shah blamed the party's leadership under Rahul Gandhi and claimed years of election defeats had left it frustrated. The report did not include a response from Congress.
