Polls have closed in Serbia's snap parliamentary election after the highest turnout since the break-up of Yugoslavia, Al Jazeera reports. The State Election Commission put turnout at 64.9 per cent by 17:00 GMT, two hours before voting ended, with first indications of the result expected later in the evening.
The vote pits Aleksandar Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party, in power since 2012, against a student-led list that grew out of nearly two years of anti-corruption protests following the deadly Novi Sad station canopy collapse in 2024.
Independent monitors reported problems during the day. CRTA said its observers saw pressure on voters or polling staff at nearly a third of the 500 stations it watched, while CeSID logged about 260 reports of possible irregularities. Riot police were deployed near the election commission's offices in Belgrade.
