Update: Rayner and Miliband back Burnham’s call for free movement debate

·

Senior cabinet ministers have publicly supported Andy Burnham's call for an open debate on restoring free movement with the European Union, The Guardian reports, building on the prime minister's own comments earlier on Sunday.

In a Sunday Times interview, Burnham said ruling out free movement would no longer be a red line in talks with Brussels, and suggested that rejoining the single market could be done through a manifesto commitment rather than a referendum, though full EU membership would need a new vote.

The housing secretary, Angela Rayner, said the trade-offs should be put to voters at a general election, and the foreign secretary, Ed Miliband, is also among those in favour of reopening the question. The home secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has previously been more cautious, and some Labour MPs in Brexit-voting seats in the north and Midlands warn the move could cost them support.
