King Charles III welcomed Sultan Haitham of Oman to Windsor on Tuesday at the start of a three-day state visit, the first by an Omani head of state since Sultan Qaboos came in 1982, The National reports.
The sultan, escorted by the Prince of Wales, received a ceremonial welcome with a royal gun salute before riding with the King in a carriage procession through rain-soaked Windsor to the castle. Senior Omani ministers, including deputy prime ministers Shihab bin Tariq and Theyazin bin Haitham, took part.
He is due to attend a state banquet at Windsor on Tuesday evening and hold talks with Prime Minister Andy Burnham in Downing Street on Wednesday. The two leaders spoke in July about efforts to reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Later engagements include a City of London banquet and a visit to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
