German police have arrested a suspect after a fire engulfed the Eagle's Nest, the mountain-top building above Berchtesgaden in Bavaria that was built for Adolf Hitler, GB News reports. Emergency services were called shortly after 9pm local time, and around 200 firefighters and other personnel climbed the Kehlstein mountain to find the building already ablaze.
A police spokesman told the German newspaper Bild that arson was suspected. Officers said a motorcyclist had approached them on their way to the scene, and a person found nearby was later arrested and linked to the fire. Nobody was inside and no injuries were reported, while the exact cause remains under investigation.
Completed in 1938 at an altitude of 1,834 metres, the building is now owned by the Bavarian government and operates as a tourist site with an exhibition on its Nazi past.
