Sweden's centre-left opposition parties have agreed on emergency legislation to stop the deportation of young people who grew up in the country with their families, The Local Sweden reports.
The plan would cover people who previously lived legally in Sweden with relatives, still have family links there, and had a residence permit application refused from 20 July 2021 onwards. Those eligible would receive a 13-month temporary permit. It would not protect people who have gone into hiding, those facing removal for crimes or security reasons, or anyone found to have led a dishonest lifestyle.
The Centre Party's migration spokesperson, Niels Paarup-Petersen, said it sent a clear message about where to draw the line. The head of the Migration Agency, Maria Mindhammar, said it was not yet decided whether removals would be paused while the law is prepared.
