A 16-year-old student has been arrested after allegedly attacking a teacher with an axe at an international school in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, in an incident that was broadcast live on social media, CNA reports.
Police said they received an emergency call shortly after 8am reporting that a student had brought firecrackers to school and hurt a teacher, who reportedly suffered hand injuries. Recordings of the livestream, apparently filmed from a phone strapped to the teenager's head, were removed by Malaysia's communications regulator after circulating online. The boy is being held in the psychiatric ward of Sarawak General Hospital, and police are still investigating the motive.
Sarawak's minister for women, children and community wellbeing, Fatimah Abdullah, urged the public not to shame or condemn the teenager before the facts were known, and asked people not to share the footage.
