Severe flooding across the Four Corners region of the south-western US led to rescues from rooftops and the evacuation of low-lying areas in Colorado and New Mexico on Friday, ABC News reports, citing the Associated Press.

New Mexico National Guard teams used boats, helicopters and amphibious vehicles to reach stranded residents in San Juan County, where an official said people were being taken from homes with up to four feet of water inside. About 600 households in Farmington were told to leave as the San Juan River rose past forecast levels.

In southern Colorado, the Archuleta County sheriff said flooding was worse than predicted and described unprecedented damage to roads and other infrastructure. Rescuers tried to reach two people trapped in a submerged motorhome. No deaths or serious injuries had been reported by midday. The floods follow several days of storms that also hit Utah and Arizona.
