Kenyan court suspends order allowing fishing in Lake Nakuru

·

The High Court in Nakuru has temporarily blocked a directive by Kenya's Blue Economy minister, Hassan Joho, permitting fishermen to return to the lake inside Lake Nakuru National Park, AllAfrica reports, carrying a report from Capital FM.

Justice Abdi Hassan granted the orders after the Consumer Federation of Kenya argued that fish from the lake could contain harmful levels of heavy metals, including lead and arsenic, citing scientific studies. The group said fishing should not restart until new tests show the fish are safe to eat.

The court barred the interior ministry, the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Kenya Fisheries Service and the police from enforcing Joho's instruction, which he issued on 16 October at a forum in Nakuru, until the case is heard. The lake lies inside a national park and wildlife sanctuary.
