India's Ministry of External Affairs has rejected Iranian media reports that it turned down a request from Tehran to transport life-saving medicines, The Hindu reports.
Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday that India was in contact with Iranian officials to help move the medicines as a humanitarian gesture, but that the regional conflict had made air links between the two countries difficult. The denial followed comments by the head of Iran Air, who said the airline could not import medicines because India and Singapore had not granted flight permits.
India suspended passenger and cargo flights by Iran Air, which had operated a weekly Tehran to Mumbai service, in May, apart from two flights allowed in July. Opposition MP John Brittas wrote to Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar urging the government to ensure that medicines could reach Iran.
