Bharat Biotech to cut malaria vaccine price by 40% under Gavi-UNICEF deal

·

The Indian vaccine maker Bharat Biotech says it will cut the price of its malaria vaccine, Mosqivac, by about 40% to €5.50 a dose under an agreement with UNICEF backed by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, The Hindu reports.

The vaccine, known as RTS,S/AS01, was developed by GSK and partners and became the first malaria vaccine recommended by the World Health Organization in 2021. The lower price, down from €9.30, is expected to apply from early 2027 and is forecast to save around $50 million between 2027 and 2029, enough to give the full four-dose course to up to one million more children.

Demand has outstripped early forecasts. UNICEF has delivered more than 74 million doses, and the vaccine is part of routine immunisation in 25 African countries that carry most of the world's malaria burden.
