Five Uyghurs held in Thailand since 2014 are the subject of Chinese arrest warrants, the head of Thailand's National Security Council has said, according to an AFP report published by Hong Kong Free Press. Chaipruak Doungprapat said that if China asked for their extradition, the foreign ministry would assess the request and a court would decide whether they should be handed over.
The men are among more than 300 Uyghurs who fled China and were detained in Thailand in 2014; they were jailed after trying to escape immigration detention in 2020, and two were pardoned last month. Thailand sent 40 Uyghurs back to China last year, prompting international criticism. China's foreign ministry said its co-operation with Thailand followed the law. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch say the pardoned men should be allowed to go to a safe third country.
