Toledo lifts evacuation orders as mayor blames chemical leak on employee error

·

Officials in Toledo, Ohio, have lifted the last evacuation orders after a chemical tank leak this week and said it was caused by an employee's error, ABC News reports.

Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said a worker at MC Tank Terminal had raised the temperature of the tank while trying to transfer its contents, setting off a chemical reaction. The tank, which held glycidyl methacrylate, an industrial chemical used in plastics, paints and coatings, ruptured late on Tuesday. Hundreds of residents were forced from their homes and 57 people were treated in hospital.

Venting of the tank finished late on Thursday, allowing a hazardous materials team to test the site, which fire officials now consider safe. The mayor said there had been no fire or explosion, that the company had accepted responsibility, and that the investigation continues.
