President Donald Trump's declaration that the Alaska LNG pipeline and export project is now a "U.S. Federal Government Project" has left open what that means in practice, the Anchorage Daily News reports.
Funding would come through the investment accelerator programme Trump created last year, and could include foreign money or a federal ownership stake. The state's Alaska Gasline Development Corp. is expected to keep its 25 per cent share, while developer Glenfarne's 75 per cent stake could be cut or removed.
Trump has said South Korea will invest about $50 billion and Taiwan $4.5 billion, but neither has committed. Critics say the announcements are aimed at helping Senator Dan Sullivan in his close race with Democrat Mary Peltola on 3 November. Sullivan said ownership terms were being negotiated, and the Commerce Department did not comment.
