US President Donald Trump has said Canada is "working very hard" to reach a trade deal with the United States, adding that Washington holds "all the cards", the National Post reports. Talks have been stalled since late August.
Speaking in Istanbul, where he signed a strategic partnership with Turkey, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada could sign that afternoon if the US were ready, but was prepared to wait months or even for another administration. He did not rule out a deal before the US midterms on 3 November.
Carney paused negotiations over what he called last-minute US demands. Sticking points include tariffs on Canadian medium and heavy trucks, French-language labelling, streaming rules and US oversight of Canadian trade policy. Chief trade negotiator Janice Charette said on Thursday that "pens are down and the doors are open".
