Lana Nusseibeh, a senior Emirati diplomat and former UAE envoy at the UN credited with helping get aid into Gaza, is now a candidate to replace António Guterres at the head of the world body, The Guardian reports.
Ms Nusseibeh, who is of Palestinian heritage, has been endorsed by the state of Palestine. She faces criticism over the UAE's alleged arming of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces, which she has denied, and Latin American and Caribbean states have objected to her late entry, arguing their region was close to a consensus.
She says the Security Council appears deadlocked after six straw polls. Costa Rica's Rebeca Grynspan led the latest, but faced objections from two permanent members. Other candidates include Rafael Grossi of Argentina and Uganda's Olara Otunnu. Mr Guterres is due to step down at the end of the year.
