Ugandan online critics describe abductions and intimidation as families search for relatives

·

Ugandans who criticise powerful figures on social media say they face abduction, detention and threats, according to an Al Jazeera investigation. The broadcaster interviewed Praise Aloikin Opoloje at Luzira Women's Prison, where she was held from late September on a charge of using a SIM card registered to her mother, which she denies.

Opoloje says her arrest followed a video in which she said she was not afraid of General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the military chief and son of President Yoweri Museveni. She alleges men forced her into a van, beat her and threatened her before taking her to a Kampala police station; Al Jazeera said her account could not be independently verified. She was granted bail on 14 October and says she will keep speaking out. The report also describes families still searching for missing relatives.
