A Houthi siege of the Yemeni city of Taiz has now lasted 30 days, leaving residents short of food, fuel, water and medicine, Al Jazeera reports. The United Nations has repeatedly warned of a catastrophe in the city.
The blockade began when Houthi forces seized al-Turbah in the far south-west of Taiz governorate, cutting the city's main link with Aden. Having besieged Taiz from three sides since 2015, the group has now taken the western countryside and fully encircled it. About 1.5 million people live in the city, and around 180,000 displaced people are also trapped by fighting along the Lahj road. A local official described it as the worst siege of a Yemeni city since the war began, with rubbish piling up in the streets because it cannot be taken out.
