Ukraine's 92nd Separate Assault Brigade says it has evacuated a wounded infantryman from the front line using a heavy-lift hexacopter, describing the mission as a world first, NBC News reports.
Video released on Monday shows the soldier strapping into the craft and being flown at low altitude before being lowered to the ground. The brigade said mines and intense Russian drone activity made conventional unmanned ground vehicles unusable. The hexacopter, originally built as a bomber by a Ukrainian firm, had to be adapted so it could carry a person without flipping or swaying excessively.
The soldier is undergoing treatment. Ukraine's Ground Forces said drone units were already carrying out missions once seen as science fiction. The operation comes days after Kyiv approved an experimental project to use drones for medical logistics between hospitals.
