Ukrainian strikes on data centres belonging to the Russian technology company Yandex earlier this month disrupted daily life for millions of Russians, NBC News reports. The attacks, the first publicised strikes on Russian data centres, knocked out services ranging from taxi and food delivery apps to cloud storage, and some people could not open doors fitted with digital locks.
Several people told NBC News they had been unable to reach their savings for days after the company's payment service, Yandex Pay, went down, leaving them struggling to pay rent, bills and food. Yandex said on 9 October that no staff had been hurt and that it was working to restore services, most of which have since returned. The disruption reflects Ukraine's effort to make the war felt inside Russia.
