United Nations agencies have appealed for urgent funding to help the world's most vulnerable communities prepare for what is expected to be the strongest El Niño on record, Africanews reports.
Speaking in Geneva, Celeste Saulo, head of the World Meteorological Organization, said the event could be unprecedented in strength. It is expected to peak in December, with floods, droughts and extreme heat lasting into 2027. The UN aid chief, Tom Fletcher, warned that 50 million people could face greater hunger and said the next two weeks were critical.
He said Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya need supplies before heavy rains and southern Africa needs seeds and livestock. Fletcher has released $50m for 11 frontline countries, including Chad, Ethiopia, Somalia and South Sudan, and urged development banks to act quickly.
