Israeli court releases nine settlers held over attacks on journalist and diplomats

·

An Israeli court in Jerusalem has released nine of the ten settlers arrested over attacks on a US photojournalist and European diplomats in the occupied West Bank, placing them under house arrest, Al Jazeera reports. Police said one suspect remained in custody and the investigation was continuing.

Masked settlers were filmed last week assaulting Heidi Levine, a Washington Post photographer covering the olive harvest. Days later, French, Belgian and Polish diplomats and a French mayor were attacked. The arrests followed US calls for a crackdown.

The UN secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, said the situation was out of control. A Palestinian commission said it had recorded 409 attacks on farmers and their land in October, most of them by settlers. The Israeli rights group Yesh Din said most such suspects are released soon after arrest.
