Alaska House Speaker Bryce Edgmon has said lawmakers spent the past eight years playing "cat and mouse" with Governor Mike Dunleavy and constantly being on the defensive, Alaska's News Source reports.
Speaking at an update from the Bush Caucus of rural legislators, Edgmon said he was optimistic that the House, Senate and governor's office could be aligned for perhaps the first time since the 1960s. In the last session Dunleavy set a record for vetoes and called three special sessions to push property tax exemptions linked to a proposed LNG pipeline.
Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, who topped the primary vote, faces three Republicans in the race for governor, which the Cook Political Report rates as leaning Democrat. Edgmon is leaving the House to run for the state Senate seat held by Lyman Hoffman, Alaska's longest-serving legislator.
