Two of the largest US health insurers, Humana and UnitedHealthcare, are discontinuing some Medicare Advantage plans from next year, ending that coverage for about 1 million people aged 65 or over, CBS News reports. The moves were first reported by Healthcare Brew.
Humana said its plan exits for 2027 would affect roughly 600,000 members and that most would be offered an alternative plan. It said it regularly reviewed its Medicare offerings to keep care affordable and coordinated.
UnitedHealthcare confirmed it was closing a Medicare Advantage plan covering about 390,000 members, who will be able to move to another of its Medicare Advantage plans. The insurer cited higher costs and greater use of services, pressures it said were affecting the whole healthcare industry. Medicare Advantage plans are privately run alternatives to traditional Medicare.
