A judge in Ecuador has ordered that Luisa González, the left-wing former presidential candidate, remain in detention while she is investigated for alleged money laundering, Al Jazeera reports. She was arrested on Thursday in the rural town of Canuto.
Prosecutors say González, 48, is one of seven people under investigation over the financing of the 2023 presidential campaign, focusing on $500,000 spent on advertising. She has called the charges absurd, and she, her Citizen Revolution party and its leader, former President Rafael Correa, describe the case as political persecution.
Several other party figures have faced charges recently. González lost to President Daniel Noboa in 2023 and again in an April 2025 run-off, whose result she rejected as fraudulent. The party has been barred from next month's local elections.
